What’s the Difference Between PRP and PRFM?

PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma, while PRFM stands for Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix. The main difference between the two is the composition and extended platelet delivery. Platelet-rich plasma or PRP involves concentrating platelets in plasma, while PRFM involves creating a denser fibrin matrix by adding additional factors to the platelet concentrate. This results in a thicker substance that can potentially provide longer-lasting effects and improved tissue regeneration compared to PRP. This means that the platelets remain viable in PRFM for hours to days, instead of minutes to hours with PRP.

Frequently Asked Questions about PRP Kits

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?

PRP therapy is a medical procedure that uses a person's own blood to promote healing and recovery. The medical professional takes a small sample of the person's blood and uses a centrifuge to separate out the platelets, which are tiny cells that help with clotting and healing. These platelets are then injected back into the person's body, where they release growth factors, and support the body's natural healing process. Research indicates that platelet growth factors are released over a span of seven days, promoting the production of collagen and facilitating enhanced vascularization.

How is the PRFM Kit used?

This is a simple 20-minute procedure that can be performed in your doctor’s office and involves just a few simple steps:

  1. Blood draw: The medical professional will draw a tube of blood, similar to a normal  blood test.

  2. Centrifugation: The blood sample is placed in a centrifuge machine, which spins it at high speeds. This process separates the platelets and other beneficial components from the rest of the blood.

  3. Platelet injection: The concentrated platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is extracted from the sample and applied to the targeted area of your body that needs treatment based on the physician's clinical treatment plan.

Is the Use of PRP safe?

Yes, PRP use is considered safe. Since the PRP is derived from the patient's own blood, there is minimal risk of allergic reactions or adverse effects. Also, Selphyl’s unique PRFM system is completely closed, meaning that there is little risk of contamination from red blood cells and white blood cells.
